Lone Bloom, oil painting assignment, December 2024

For my second and final topic painting assignment for a painting II class, I chose to make an abstract painting with Russian khokhloma as my primary inspiration. I ended up choosing to fit this inspiration to the composition and flow of a digital abstract piece I had made a month prior, "Caustic Seas" (also my piece for Tennotober 2024 Day 14: Void). I also drew upon my previous work on Degrowth, a student game project in spring of 2024.

I treated this painting as a kind of further style exploration of what I worked on for Degrowth and as preparation for what I would like to do for my spring 2025 capstone project, with the goal of fitting Russian folk art styles to character and environment designs. Russian art in general is of particular interest to me as of late, as I explore my partial Russian heritage as a source of inspiration for these final school projects!

Four thumbnail sketches. The bottom two are inspired by previous digital abstract pieces I made. I ended up going with the bottom left composition, based on my piece "Caustic Seas" / Tennotober 2024 Day 14: Void.

After the wash (and Thanksgiving break) I started with cobalt and ultramarine blue brushstrokes.

Yellow was then added for the flowers and vines, which mixed with the still-wet blues to create some very nice shades of green. Red and yellow were added for the berries between.

More rendering throughout and using a dark violet to darken the background and define the forms more. In the final piece, ultramarine blue and alizarin crimson was also used to better color balance that that violet.
